67 Records is a co-operative recording and distribution company started in 2004 by former music industry professionals (an Entertainment/Music Attorney, a Producer/Engineer and two A&R Executives). We don't call ourselves a "record label" because that term conjures up thoughts of old men in suits whose only connection to music is based upon their love of money. Instead, we are a "community" of artists working together to collectively promote great music.
We created 67 Records because we love music and because we know that there are thousands of unknown artists whose talents dwarf those of the so-called "superstars" who routinely sell millions of CDs. 67 Records rejects the "American Idleness" of the music business and its cult of personality. We stand for the maxim that music - not image or beauty - "fills our souls, makes us whole, heals our wounds and brings us together."
It is our mission at 67 Records to discover artists who create honest, emotional and soulful original music (of all genres), give them a place to develop and grow, and introduce them to the world. We're trying to create a digital music scene at our site - a web-based "all night open jam". We understand that the web cannot provide the sense of atmosphere that a nicotine and alcohol drenched nightclub would but it can provide a place for artists to showcase their talents and bring their music to a wider audience, and a place where you will find acceptance simply because music fills your soul.
Through our grass-roots efforts, we will help each of our artists develop fan bases that are exponentially larger than the ones they can develop on their own. This exposure will increase their record sales and give them opportunities for better and more frequent gigs. Eventually, we expect that the increased exposure will allow us (given our backgrounds and contacts in A&R, production and artist representation) to open the door for our artists to obtain recording contracts, publishing deals and song licensing opportunities with companies that will appreciate their talents without regard to age, beauty or the way they shake their asses.
Our first release, The Last Day of Summer was the second full-length album released by singer-songwriter, Adam Stengel - who is one of the founders of this co-operative. The record was well-received and continues to gain exposure. From the album, we released the song, "Willie Mays" as a single. The song was picked up by scores of radio stations nationally and internationally and was named the grand prize winning song in the 8th annual Cooch Music songwriting contest. It is also featured on Diamond Cuts 8 - a compilation of baseball related songs released by Hungry For Music, a charitable organization whose mission is to purchase musical instruments for underprivileged childred. Diamond Cuts has featured songs by such successful recording artists as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Dan Bern and others. The compilation is sold at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Now available is the 67 Records Essential New Music Compilation - volume 1. It is the result of two years of hard work, searching for the best and most talented independent artists to become part of our cooperative. These 17 artists are truly outstanding and we are lucky to share our vision with them. Check out the compilation as well as the individual artists websites.
To reiterate, our goal at 67 Records is to introduce artists to the world and we eventually hope to introduce a new artist every month. We did not create 67 to exploit artists and/or take their money. 67 artists keep a vast majority of the money generated from their record sales. They own their songs and they own all of the rights to their music. The company retains a small percentage of the record sales in order to keep the website going and to help promote the constant stream of quality artists. In other words, our artists pay us a royalty - not the other way around. We exist for them.
So welcome to the new digital "all night open jam." Feel free to contact us with any questions, comments and/or suggestions and don't forget to tell your friends about us. Thanks for listening,
Marcus Penn,
President, 67 Records
